STR (Suspicious transaction report)

A suspicious transaction report tells the financial intelligence unit that a firm suspects, or has reasonable grounds to suspect, that a transaction is linked to money laundering, a predicate offence or terrorist financing. It combines structured data about the parties and transactions with a written narrative that explains who did what, when, where, why it is suspicious and how it was done.

Why it matters for brokers and payment firms

The STR is the output a regulator judges the monitoring programme by. Late, vague or unsupported reports are a common inspection finding, and every STR needs a documented decision behind it.
